I'm gonna be getting my first car soon and its gonna be a fixer upper, I haven't seen it yet but my dad has multiple times. He said the car smokes a whole lot when you turn it on, to the point where hes gonna tow it to our house to start working on it. Hes not sure as to what is wrong with it at the moment and is going to inspect it more once its here. The car is a 2002 VW Jetta, the smoke is a grayish color and its been sitting for a couple years if that helps.

Does it have a turbo by any chance? If so, check all that it whistles and is working, if not; replace it. Other thing it might be is that the oil has been filled up too much.

for starters, normally when there is alot of smoke coming from the exhaust, that is oil being burnt. which means that there is an internal oil leak coming from bad rings around the pistons. Definitely not worth the time or money to fix on a volkswagen.

Is it the Jetta 2.0 TDI if so it could be the glow plugs need replacing. Also as sg1hicks said, check the oil.

My father was saying something about replacing the head gasket, I'm guessing from these replies that's not the problem lol

Before doing anything I would get a tester to see if you have combustibles in your coolant (if you do than it has a bad head gasket which would mean new motor in a lot of cases)

Check the oil and make sure the turbo whines if its a 2.0L Turbo. If the turbo doesnt wine then you need to replace it. Just give it a good rev to check the turbo.

If it's the head gasket , it isn't even worth fixing, especially on a 2002.

I see a couple people saying it's probably not worth fixing, I'm picking the car up for only $300 bucks, so hopefully the price of repairs isn't that much to make it not worth.
