Russian Man with Muscular Dystrophy Set to Undergo World's First Head Transplant

The procedure will reportedly take 36 hours and require a team of 150 doctors and nurses. The patient would lie in a coma for about a month while doctors connect spinal cords to the head.

It's crazy to see how far science and medical advancements have come! Good luck to the guy as this could lead to a lot of new things!

I am curious to see how this unfolds. I personally feel that it is a surgery that is to far from our technology. There is way to many things that could go wrong.. so many parts that the body can reject and if just one of them rejects then the whole thing will have been for a death. I am sure the guy is willing to do this for science due to his quality of life, but it just baffles me the risks they are willing to take. I hope all goes good and definitely cannot wait for the end results.

To be fair though, what goes wrong this time would be a mistake they could fix for next time. Although it may sound quite harsh, it's quite trial and error!

Yes I agree with you, that is what I meant by if he is pretty much donating himself to science. Here is the thought of the day though: It has been shown that people who receive transplants can actually grow to be depressed from the thought of another persons organ being in them. With them taking his head and spinal cord and putting it onto someone elses body.. what are the psychological effects he will get too.

If your interested.. read this article by Medical Today about the whole situation.. quite interesting.

Sounds simple? Um, not even in the slightest.. I cannot imagine the planning that will have to go into this, along with back up plans, and back up plans for those back up plans etc. There is so much that could go wrong. It isn't like he is changing the batteries in the guy.. he is swapping his head and spinal cord onto another body.
