South Carolina Officer Is Charged With Murder in Black Mans Death

A white police officer in North Charleston, S.C., was charged with murder on Tuesday after a video surfaced showing him shooting in the back and killing an apparently unarmed black man while the man ran away.

The officer, Michael T. Slager, 33, said he feared for his life because the man took his stun gun in a scuffle after a traffic stop on Saturday. A video, however, shows the officer firing eight times as the man Walter L. Scott, 50 fled. The North Charleston mayor announced the state charges at a news conference Tuesday evening.

When youre wrong, youre wrong, Mayor Keith Summey said of the shooting during the news conference. And if you make a bad decision, dont care if youre behind the shield or just a citizen on the street, you have to live by that decision.

The shooting unfolded after Officer Slager stopped the driver of a Mercedes-Benz with a broken taillight, according to police reports. Mr. Scott ran away, and Officer Slager chased him into a grassy lot that abuts a muffler shop. He fired his Taser, an electronic stun gun, but it did not stop Mr. Scott, according to police reports.

Moments after the struggle, Officer Slager reported on his radio, Shots fired and the subject is down. He took my Taser, according to police reports.

But the video, which was taken by a bystander and provided to The New York Times by the Scott familys lawyer, presents a different account. The video begins in the vacant lot, apparently moments after Officer Slager fired his Taser. Wires, which carry the electrical current from the stun gun, appear to be extending from Mr. Scotts body as the two men tussle and Mr. Scott turns to run.

Something it is not clear whether it is the stun gun is either tossed or knocked to the ground behind the two men and Officer Slager draws his gun, the video shows. When the officer fires, Mr. Scott appears to be 15 to 20 feet away and fleeing. He falls after the last of eight shots.

The officer then runs back toward where the initial scuffle occurred and picks something off the ground. Moments later, he drops an object near Mr. Scotts body, the video shows.

A white police officer killing a black man, or one being charged for it?

Look, I understand you're not supposed to charge & attack a police officer, but if he was RUNNING AWAY, he wasn't POSING A THREAT. Cops assume they have more power than they really do, and it's clearly a problem.

I wonder how this story would have turned out if there was no one to video tape it. Did they ever say what it was that was placed near the victim? I have yet to see anything confirming what that was, so I wonder if they left it out of the report since maybe they saw the guy filming. Kind of reminded me of the cop that was caught planting evidence on a guy somewhat recently. Not sure if it is like a cop culture or what, but there seems to be a frightening trend in US police departments. At least this guy was caught and charged. Wish I could say the same for the other stories with similar outcomes.

More people need to pull out their phones and record every single cop they see, whether or not they are or aren't being directly involved, or how big the issue is. Even a simple speeding ticket. We have to keep these guys on their toes so things like this can stop happening. I hope that weak boy gets life in prison without parole.

Bullsh!t! If he attacked him, then ran away, he has all the reasons to be shot. Welcome to the legal system! You disobey the law, you pay the fines. I don't care if its being tazed or shot, this cop was trained to do just that. Subdue suspects. Which he did in ways that had to be done. I stand by this cop 110%

It's criminals like that who get off the hook for the stuff they do and its the liberals like you that believe them and make them go free.

Do to the fact that he attacked him and flees. I don't believe he should of been shot 8 times. It would of been different if the man was only shoot once. No he was shot 8 times, he didn't catch him and put him in custody. He intended to kill him, if he realized that he was being recorded than he would of chased him. But no we wanted to use his power over him and he showed police brutality.

I saw this video on FaceBook earlier today and this is completely outrageous. These racist white b***ards will never learn.
Not saying all white people are racist btw.

Oh god, I don't want to abuse the 2nd Amendment therefore I must be a liberal. Did you watch the video? He didn't try to subdue the man at all, he pulled out a gun RIGHT AWAY. He wasn't even running that fast, and the size difference had no reason to lead him to be "scared for his life" especially if the man didn't take his stun gun...

The thing is, you don't know what that officer actually said to the man either when they were face to face, and conservatives (ex: you) love just assuming that 101% of cops aren't corrupt/racist. We probably had the same views on the Brown/Trayvon Martin cases but this one is obviously the cops fault.
