are there any drawbacks to compressing my hdd?

It shouldn't reduce system performance, but if it does, then you can defragment the hard drive. This wil increase overall system performance. But you should not need to do it.

It most certainly will not cause any type of system damage.

I bet you have partitioned your HDD.

type in the start menu, "disk partition" and have a look. See what your disk really looks like.

I had a problem with installing windows before and I kept having to wipe my computer so I put windows installation on the first hdd you see that doesnt have a name, I don't use that hdd at all, the second one is the one that is being used for everything
