I personally use Kali Linux but for you I would go for Ubuntu.

Thanks for the help everyone, I now have Ubuntu working on my other Laptop.
do I have to download any files so I can use wireless?
will I have to you the original discs to download everything onto my new hard drive?

Ubuntu is easily the best free OS, it is great and has all the features needed to run.

Ubuntu is a solid option if you have morals and prefer to not pirate a copy of Windows.
