I want a thing where you plug in a box via a HDMI cable to a TV then a power cable and you can plug in a USB to play video files off, does this exist or...?

Do you have a smart TV? If so, most of the time there will be a USB port somewhere on the back of the TV.

In that case, if your TV and PC both have VGA you could connect your TV to your PC with the VGA cable. You will be able to duplicate your PC screen to show on both the TV and your PC and then of course play the video files from your PC which will also show them on your TV.
The same thing works with your HDMI cable.

I know it really sucks, but you need to have the "smart tv" bs. I looked high and low for the same thing. There is nothing. Basically you can use a gaming console, or you hook up a desktop or laptop to your tv via your hdmi.
*You can't just plug your external drive into the usb of your tv, it doesn't work.*
Currently I use my Mac Mini, which I bought because my laptop was dying, and because I wanted to use my 47inch tv as monitor. The Mac Mini is awesome for use of external drives and anything you can do on the internet/computer.

I know i can do that but I want something much simpler, just a little box to play them off.
