Ok so I've been working for a restaurant for 6 months now and for the past 2 months my bosses/the management team, who are also the people who own it (It's a small town business)
have been treating me like complete crap. Not to sound self centered but I would consider myself one of the hardest working employees there. I'm a smoker and I limit myself to one cig every 2 hours, most the time it's every 3 hours, but every time I go out for a smoke they come outsie and chew me out for it. Calling me a lazy shitty worker. Even though 90% of my co workers are smokers and they go out at least 3 times an hour and nothing is said to hem about it. One of my co workers is my bosses wife, She's only 19 and he's 36. He gives her alcohol at work and all she does is sit on buckets and watches netflix on her phone. Literally all day every day. They see her doing it all the time and nothing is said. I always have to do all the work. ANYWAYS they cut my hours down to 2 days a week and only 5 hours a day. I'm renting a house and I obviously can't survive on that. I told them that and they just shrugged and walked away. Everyone else I work with still has 5 days a week. Can this be considered unfair practices and can I take legal action?

My suggestion is to find another job. But, do not quit this one till you have another job.

It's their business. There is no corporate office for you to contact, so there is nothing that you can do. Even if you take legal action they will just fire you, and you'll get nothing. Find another job. That's the only thing that you can do. They can make your hours whatever they want, because it's there business. You say that you are a hard worker, but why would they treat you bad if that were true? It just doesn't logically make sense. I'm not trying to start anything, I'm just pointing out holes in the story.

As long as you're paid at least minimum wage and aren't over-worked, there's not much you can do. They decide how much they want you to work, and you can't do anything about that. Although, from what I've found, Chef's are the worst. They constantly shout at you and talk down to you. The last 2 managers of the Hotel restaurant I used to work at, were not very nice people either. It just seems to be the way it works and you have to deal with it, or find work elsewhere. I made the mistake of quitting my job because I was unpaid and over-worked, but now I can't find work anywhere and don't want to go crawling back to my old job. So, if you do look for work elsewhere, keep your current job until you have a place somewhere else.

No I understand it would sound like a lie lol but they play favorites here. If they don't like you from the start they never will and will constantly treat you like shit.

Get another job.

You said they cut your hours and you can't survive on that.
If you can't survive on that, how do you think you're going to survive when you have both rent AND legal bills?

Even if you could take legal action it would not be worth it after paying court fees, lawyer fees, ETC.

It'd be too much work for practically nothing in return. If they are unfair, they'll pay for it eventually because they won't be able to manage with a reputation like that. Find another job and put in your two weeks notice and end off in a good note. Don't just quit immediately and end off on a terrible note because they'll just tell your future employers that you're a bad worker and that would hurt you even more.
