I had 690 defense and I just gave up about 40 of it so I can gain more light. I do not know if this is what I should be doing or what? Should I be keeping the higer defense or work on increasing my light? Thanks!

Always go for more light, higher level = better gear. You will get a lot better gear once you start getting more light. Always, always, always go for more light unless it's like, say...
250 Armor
14 light
vs
169 Armor
15 light
If it's like this, go for the 250 Armor, you will come across something better with more light.

169 was an example. I guess it is true, you usually don't find anything with that close of a difference. And when you select "Upgrade Defense" it also adds to your light. Nevermind my point op.

So my armor was 185 with 8 light. I have it up 225 armor with no light

Go for the 8 light on that one. Go for light rather than defense.
