I weight lift. I only discourage weak people when it's my friend or if that person isn't serious about it. Otherwise they're taking up space where serious people are trying to actually get bigger or more lean.

No I know what you mean man and yea its terrible that's why people are always so awkward at the gym and frustrated. I'm not sure if you go to gyms outside of school but if you do then you would know that when you walk in by yourself it feels like everyone is staring at you then you start lifting and it gets more awkward so you put in headphones XD

I recently joined a gym and I've gone quite a bit and the bigger guys there seem to give advice to those who seem like they actually wanna help themselves and get bigger. I haven't had any problems with other guys that are hulked out compared to me. But I see where you come from. Everyone starts off somewhere.

There is a different between weightlifting and bodybuilding. Weightlifting involves using the heaviest weights possible and doing a small amount of reps (3, 2 or 1 reps) where as bodybuilding is all about using a fairly high weight with more repetitions, plus the outcome is different as the physiques differentiate from bodybuilder to weightlifter. Bodybuilder goes for size whereas a weightlifter aims directly at strength. I have seen people with a sense of cockiness about them in some gyms although I am yet to come across someone that is arrogant because of their hobby associated with resistance training. I rarely use the gym in my college as it is most of the time filled with people that do not use the correct form, do not have goals, and they mess around a lot which is the main reason that I do not use my college gym. My gym is a small gym which is filled with people which are not disrespectful, cocky or arrogant and that is mainly due to the ages and sizes differing between each individual that goes. Each person has to start somewhere so these "scrawny kids" that may be a different somatotype to you do not deserve the dislike towards them and that is my input on things (said due to the comments above).

This is probably just because it's in your school. If you go to another gym I'm sure you will find people of all sizes that are respectful of each other and won't mock you whatever level you are at. (Obviously you can still encounter people like this but I imagine it will be a lot less frequent), that's what it's like at my gym anyway.

I bet a lot of the "big" guys in that gym probably have bigger egos than they do muscles and probably haven't the foggiest about lifting and how to do it correctly. So I'd do my best to ignore them.

Saying that I haven't done much weights recently in terms of gaining muscle as I've been focusing a lot on running. But I imagine I will start trying to gain muscle very soon!

I don't understand why so many people agree with this and thanked your post.

Maybe that kind of thing happens in other country's/schools, lots of immaturity and bullying in - "the hardcore guys always kick them out and ridicule them".

But where I come from it's totally different, I was always into my weightlifting and football when I was a schoolkid, and that kind of thing just didn't happen in my school. Sure every school has bullies but the smaller kids at my school where never treated this way, I suppose my year was more mature than other(s) because the kids who couldn't defend themselves would never be hassled without someone who can defend themselves eventually stepping in.

In adult life though, it almost never happens. I suggest going to public gyms if this happens in your school, that way it's mostly and adult environment and people there would give you the best advice/help considering they have been doing it a whole lot longer than a someone at your school gym has.
