When I try to drag images into photoshop it doesn't let me, I have to go into file and open as smart object in a whole other tab then drag that into the project im working on :/

I don't think it lets you drag pictures in, but you can do this:
File -> then towards the bottom you should see something like "Place File" or "Place Embedded"
If you do that it will place the picture you want on the project you have open.
