Unless he's on a budget, 7.1 is the way to go.

Not really no game supports 7.1 and few movies do as well the 5.1 is the defacto surround sound standard. And the only "7.1" headsets are just stereo(2 speaker) headsets bundled with dolby software that you can get free from razer thatll work with any headset. There are only 2 true 7.1 surround headsets and I can only recommend one of them.

True 5.1/7.1 usually have less sound quality as they have multiple drivers. Virtual surround sound works just as good, which most games have the options to change it to and there's also software that allows you to use virtual surround sound. (eg. [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] )

This is my personal preference but the Steelseries Siberia V2 Frostbite Edition is a nice headset.

A true surround sound headset will beat out those usb surround headsets any day in sound quality for several reasons, small speaker technology has advanced greatly in the last decade thanks to bose and the various smartphone companies and speaker angling.

The second reason is more sounds are playable at one time because one speaker wont be overloaded with too simultaneous sounds, this is very apparent in gaming and also music, I was hearing new things in songs ive been listening to all my left, new background rhythms instruments vocals etc.

The third reason it will outperform a usb headset is usb itself. Those headsets are limited to 16 bit/48khz response. The tiamats and roccats and most other analog headsets will do 24bit/192khz. Its like the difference between 16 bit color and 32 bit color. Once youve had the higher quality you can tell the lower quality right away and will never go back.

Additionally I can say Ive experienced both the usb surround headsets and a true surround headset and I can tell you based on my first hand experience which is better.

I personally like Razer products, and they have new neon Kraken headsets.
They look really nice in my opinion.
