1. Don't get a Vauxhall Corsa, Citroen Saxo or anything that makes you look stupid.

2. Insurance is around 1000 to 2000 for a learner car as in 1.6L and below, so make sure to leave a lot of money for that and quote the car before you buy it.

3. Now, good cars for a first driver. To start off with German motors (Very reliable), VW Golf 1.4 would be good (Maybe even a 1.6 if you're able to afford it) and the engines are very good. The other is as you said an Audi A3 but I am not sure for the insurance on one of them (I don't think you could pick up an Audi A1 very cheap due to them being fairly new).

As I said stay away from some, but a very cheap one is a Peugeot 105 or 106 but stay away from a 107 due to the thing looking like it would be destroyed in a crash.

So a car list:

Peugeot 106 (1.0, 1.1, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6 or electric if you want to sound like you're in the future)
Volkswagen Golf 1.4
Volkswagen Golf 1.6
Volkswagen Polo 1.4
Volkswagen Polo 1.2
Audi A3 1.6 (Depending on insurance)

Hope I helped

stevekeith wrote Should be passing my test soon and should be buying a car, I just have literally no clue what to choose.
I live in the UK and have a budget of around 6000 including insurance. Only going to be used for college and ferrying friends around. Would like something with a bit of kick to it, so not like a 1 litre. Anyone have any ideas, or what was your first car? Any help is greatly appreciated

You may have the money but I wouldn't recommend anything to powerful as you have just recently taken/ passed your test. What car have you been learning in and doing your lessons in?

I know when I passed the cheapest insurance quote I got was 1250 on a 1.4 so it is a bit cheaper but I wouldn't go anything above 1.4 yet it just wouldn't be worth it.

My first car was a 2007 Chevy Cobalt. Great on gas and the 2.4 EcoTech doesn't do too bad. Not too sure on the availability in the UK though, i'd go with a Golf or something along those lines if I was you.

I highly recommend a Honda Civic, very cheap cars, good on gas, but watch getting a 2 door car. They tend to have a higher insurance rate due the fact two-door cars are considered a Sport Vehicle.

I have to disagree. Everything you say makes sense, but you gotta understand the car your talking about. It's a civic.

This is why you should not get a civic.
-They are freaking everywhere! I see them 15-20 times a day.
-They are slow. I drive a 2004 Dodge Caravan and it has a better power to weight ratio than this piece of crap.

So in a nutshell. You'll get burned by a crap ton of other cars. Have a car that a lot of people own. And a car that would get wrecked by a minivan. Sure you save money on Gas and Insurance but even so in my opinion it ain't worth it.

I say go for a 01-02 Acura Tl. It has decent looks has a decent amount of power. And decent gas Mileage.

My first car is a 1991 Leyland mini, the insurance is cheap, I'm 17 and can get it for just under a grand. It isn't the easiest to drive but at the same time t isn't hard and because it weighs nothing, 1L is actually pretty nippy. And the best part is that because it is only 1L, it does about 35-40MPG
