You should NEVER put it standing up! Always make sure your Xbox is laying flat and in a well venelated area

Horizontal is the best for airflow. Also, to fix overheating, change the thermal paste. It's easy to do even if you're not tech savvy.

Half a ring IS overheating
i personally dont think standing or laying makes a difference, everyone always says different.
if you're un-able to take it apart and clean the fans out then for now just leave it half-hour or so to cool it, make sure its not on the floor or in a small space (more dust gets inside) make sure its not a hot place (i used to have my xbox behind my desktop with all the desktops hot air being blown into the xbox, bad idea)

if it keeps overheating, take it to a shop and have new fans or faster fans put in, or if you have warranty still get your console sent off.
