Book the tickets in advance,
EG. If you buy tickets 2 weeks before you go they could be like $800 (I dont really know the cost of a ticket from the US to Straya)
But lets say if you buy them a few months in advance it could be like $400.
Go to your local travel place and they will be able to hook you up.
I think Virgin may do routes from America to Straya, I would recommend Jetstar since they are great and cheap but the only American place they go to is Honolulu
Virgin airlines is also pretty good, (Better than Qantas, anything is really better than them..)
