I don't really understand how someone can 'accidentally' shoot somebody. But, ya know, things happen.

The cop should have stopped and waited a second instead of making a quick assumption like most of us do.. You should be able to tell a 70/yo and i would assume most of them would be honest and wait till you see or go up to the man and put look on the otherside (risky but yeah).. Or one last thing is it the topic of the story should be "Cop shoots 70 year old man thinking he was pulling a gun or just "Cop shoots 70 year old man" I learned that in L.A. that the it doesn't matter what he has or is going on its just the 2/3 main points

It wasn't instinct but, more so carelessness. I've yet to see a cane that even resembles a gun. I own a few rifles and shotguns myself and could tell the difference between them and a cane with no problems at all.

Accidents happen. I feel sorry for the man but it is a cops instinct to shoot if someone has there hand on something and pulls it out.
