The Nokia Lumia 1020 can take some great shots.

Doing a quick google search I found that it has these features.

Scenes: Close-up, Night, Night Portrait, Sports, Backlight and Auto. Use this in the situations described to get a better overall exposure.
ISO: Auto and 100-3200. Wow for a camera phone to have this option is awesome. Refer to the ISO description in the guide I wrote.
Exposure Value: +2 to -2 stops. This is going to be your Aperture and Shutter speed in one setting. Also refer to the guide on Aperture and Shutter speed to explain these.
White Balance: Auto, Cloudy, Daylight, Fluorescent, Incandescent. This is something I should write about in the guide but white balance can be used to adjust the colors to look normal. Example: You're in a room with a bunch of Fluorescent lighting? Use that White Balance. You can also use a random white balance to achieve cool color effects If you want.

I would just shoot in Auto white balance for now and you can always adjust the Temp. and Tint in Lightroom to achieve the same effects.
Aspect Ratio: 16:9 and 4:3. The proportion for the width and height of the image.
Focus Assist Light: On or Off. Like a flash but it comes on for you to find a focal point in a darker room before you take a picture.

An excellent guide - will definitely help me brush up my photography skills. I've had the DSLR for a while now, but haven't used it much because I was waiting for a guide like this.

Thank you!

Great post and well deserves a sticky.

I'm trying to become a better photographer so I'll take a lot of this info into what I do.

Also, I've seen your work and I love it!

Very informative thread. Should have been a sticky already.

My mother is a photographer and shes very good at it. I hate how someone thinks they can take a photo with their iphone and put some filters on it and call it photography. I've been looking for a career and I might pursue in photography. Thanks for this post.

Thank you, this is great.
I don't do photography now, but I want to get in to it.
Hopefully this will still be around (and easy to find *ahem*) whenever I get the chance to take it up.
