The reason why you had a problem while jailbeaking your iPod/iPhone was because you did over an air update which means when the iOS that you were trying to jailbreak came out you updated it directly from the phone. You didn't use iTunes to update your phone and download the firmware. So before you jailbreak make sure you do a full factory restore from iTunes as it might cause you problems if you're trying to jailbreak with an OTA update. So go restore your iPhone/iPod on iTunes before the jailbreak and you shouldn't have any problems.
