Microtransactions in most games today are basically a company going
"Hey, you have spent 6 months of your life trying to get these things, but give us even more money and you can have all of that in no time at all!"

They take some fun out of lots of games, and plenty of good ones! Here's a list off the top of my head, if you don't believe me or just are interested:

Phantasy Star Universe (Amazing game, but online servers in US at least shut down)

Battlefield Bad Co 2 (Not really ruined, but EA's first step in BF pay to win)

Battlefield 3 or 4 (No ruined either, but paying for all unlocks erks me so bad)

Runescape

Sims 3 (Not pay to win obv, but god damn EA stop with the stupid DLC and make a game good)

Soon to be CoD (People bought DLC for a gun in MP, this will happen pretty soon with all)

Everquest (Once again a great game, but why Sony, just WHY)

Facebook games (I don't play them, nor will I ever, but I get so many damn messages)

Gotham City Imposters (Like BF, pay enough and you'll unlock everything)

To make this a tad bit quicker, most MMORPG's (No, not all of them)

There are two tiers of Microtransactions most popular in games:

1. Items you can unlock the normal way, or pay to unlock instantly
2. Items you can only unlock by paying lots of cash to have the upperhand

As for number 1, you see this often in Battlefield, GCI, Planetside, and a few MMO's. The companies defense for this is mostly "Well if you dedicate 4 years of your life to our game you too can have the gear without paying". And that argument is absolute **** and they know it. You can have the normal everyday players going around trying to rank up and have the excitement of unlocking that next gun, or item, etc, only to start being killed by players who have no experience at the game, but with their willingness to shell out cash it doesn't matter. It gives lots of players who unfairly use this horrible system to get the upperhand for no good reason other then their financial benefits, and these companies have the Audacity to defend them. Companies who follow this route generally just want even more than the usual $60 (Plus maybe membership payments) from players who don't want to play the legit way. It's essentially (Credit to G_Man :bigups:) a Call of Duty 10th prestige lobby that you pay for.

And on to Number 2. This is most seen in MMO's and most importantly, MMORPG's. Normally in the form of amazing Gear and weapons and such that normal players can't get because they either have values against paying for items, or simply don't have the means. Meaning, players who will sink to the level of paying for these items the creators actually put time and effort in to (Unlike the normal gear and loadouts) will be able to, on a regular basis, put a major hurt on the players who just want to play fair and not pay for these things.

There are also things like Rentals (Like contracts in FIFA, you can get them randomly, or pay for them in various ways), and like in Blacklight Retribution with the expiration feature. I don't really mind these as you can also unlock either needed items just by playing and not paying.

How about cosmetic changes? Like TTG Gold for instance. I have no problem with these as if players want to pay a bit to stand out (As long as said items don't give any real advantage) or look different it's their choice entirely and I wont yell at them about it.

The worst part of Microtransactions is that companies KNOW they can do it and still make profit because players refuse to stand up against it and they break down as to fund the evil thing known as the Microtransaction and get things quicker or better.

Some games microtransactions are actually really well put together and here are some I would recommend that have these but are not unbalanced:

TF2 (Team Fortress 2. Valve is good on Microtransactions in their games not being horrid)

World of Tanks (Just play it and you'll understand)

DOTA (Defense of the ancients. Once again, good on not being Horrid.)

LoL (League of Legends. As much as I despise this game it's normally fair)

Hopefully Elder Scrolls Online (I've had hands on experience and I have hopes)

Planetside 2 (Typically not too bad on this. And it's an amazing MMOFPS!)

Just remember:

Playing > Paying

I hate microtransactions, especially on black ops 2. You already pay 60 for the game and probably 50 for the season pass. Now they expect you to pay even more money for camos and stupid stuff like that..
