Now first off I would like to say that I'm a complete noob when it comes to this stuff so please bare with me here.

Basically I'm curious as to how I can mod my Xbox DVD drive to play burned games. I hear something about flashing it? I want to be able to play these games online without it being console banned. Can anyone link me to a tutorial on how I could do this.

I basically just want to do this so I can play burned games before they're released like people did with ghosts.

It depends on your disk drive model.
You also have to buy a specific disk (dual layer)
and you probably want to buy a burner that will 100% patch the game.

Do you know of any videos or posts that could give me in depth tutorials on this?

You will have to find out what DVD drive you have before you can watch a video on flashing it.
Here is a tutorial on how to find what drive you have.

If it's a slim, it may be a lot harder to flash it.

Nope. When you flash a Xbox, you flash the PCB (printed circuit board). That PCB has your console specific DVD key that is necessary to play Xbox 360 games. Without it, all you can play is movies.
