i have got a Motorola Motosmart XT389 and the android it runs on is ginger bread and i want to try and get it running on ice cream sandwich is there anyway i can get that updateor maybe if i root my phone can i get it running on ice cream sandwich if so how do i root it safely

No, you will not be able to run Ice Cream Sandwich on this device. It simply doesn't have enough RAM, and it doesn't have the right specs. Even if you found a ROM for it it would be unusable due to lag.

I see this a lot and I'd like to clear it up. Rooting != Changing Android versions. When you give a program on your computer administrator access do you get a Windows update? No. Rooting on Android is basically like giving a program administrator access, it has no relation to your operating system version.

If you want to try and update it you need to unlock the bootloader, flash a custom recovery, and then install a custom ROM.
