He started messaging me on facebook just now asking if I game on PC, which I do. Then he told me he's getting an Alienware 17in laptop. I told him it's overpriced, to which he replied he doesn't know what to look for and he really want it for the lighting effects.

I'm asking for help to recommend a better laptop. PLEASE HELP!!!

That may be a good laptop. Now, I would definitely recommend a desktop for gaming, especially with the bigger games like bf3 and arma if that's what hes getting it for. I would hate using a laptop for gaming, I like to have more room.

What country do you live in? What was he going to spend on the Alienware? Could you please link the exact model of Alienware laptop?

If you can answer all of those I can give you a useful, comprehensive answer.

I didn't ask how much he's going to be spending, he just told what model he's going to get.

Show him some sager laptop, MSI, or asus laptops for comparison. He can get the same, if not better performance, for a lot cheaper.

I have had two sager laptops, but 17 inch, and they have ran every thing I wanted to play.

The new Alienware model line is definitely a great gaming laptop, I'd actually suggest he gets it because with an Alienware, you can upgrade it as it starts to fall behind. Although you'll definitely be paying the price to be able to do that.

One thing too keep in mind while looking at other laptops is the graphics card. The other laptops can match the specs for a much lower price, but most old them have low-end, non-upgradable integrated graphics cards.
