There is currently a rumor going around stating that Microsoft is going to developers and asking if an increased GPU clock and 12 GB of RAM DDR3 is necessary for the best gaming experience.

Microsoft has asked developers to list System Specs they want in an order of importance.

The source also states that a friend of his, who is a developer, would not be surprised if 12 GB of RAM is going to be in the final box.

Microsoft did upgrade its RAM in the past with the Xbox 360. It was originally supposed to have 256MB of RAM but it was upgraded to 512MB of RAM prior to its release. This upgrade cost Microsoft a total of $1,000,000,000.

This will not happen. It's to late and if they do it they will have a shortage again like they had at the 360 launch. Also, this was stated by anonymous people we honestly can't trust. Also they can raise the clockspeed though a software update but it's to late for RAM.

Small correction, they are giving developers the choice between 12 GB of RAM *OR* an over clocked GPU

I think they should put 12GB of ram in the Xbox. Games don't require that much ram now, BUT in the future games will require more ram. MS said the Xbox is designed for the future and not the here and now, so 12GB of ram would support their idea of a next-gen console.
