Are there any ways of getting riot points without paying for them which aren't viruses or scams? I will rep for a good answer.

Nope, the only way to get Riot Points is to buy them, get them gifted like skins or win give aways/tournaments

I got 400 or so for hitting a certain rank. I believe it was 5 or 6.

I now have a random uneven amount of riot points lol.

When you reach level 3, you get 400 RP. If you get 10 friends to refer you and rank up to level 10, you get 975. Check out the website for the gifts from referrals.

Just try to be an OBJ person. I mostly did that and got kills along with it to get more RP.
