right before you all say ohh pc is better, i know i have a high end gaming pc and i love it but i want a laptop and my parents said i could get a macbook for my birthday.

so im looking at macbooks and i really dont know which one to get, i want it to be 13" (or 13.3" whatever it is) that is a must, and im looking at 2 of them in general, i dont care if it is a macbook pro/air.

if you have ANY experience with macbooks and you can tell me some things about them (good or bad) then please do so, also feel free to link some other macbooks that you think are good.
and finally im not going to be gaming on it so i dont care about the GPU because as i said if i wanted to do gaming or anything CPU heavy i can do it on my PC.

macbook pro im looking at: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

macbook air im looking at: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

The Air and Retina Pros aren't overpriced at all. People just tend to jump on the bandwagon and not understand that a premium product carries a premium price tag.

I strongly suggest the 13" Air over the regular Pro. The Air has a higher-resolution display, much better design, and most importantly, solid-state storage.

To add to r00t's post, I would suggest that you buy a lower base model with the lowest amounts of RAM and Storage, and buy an SSD and RAM from newegg. This way you'll be able to save money and/or get a higher definition display or a higher-tiered cpu.

EDIT- Not possible. sorry

You can't do that with the Air, though. Everything is soldered to the motherboard.

Thanks for replying but the macpro im looking at has retina display so that is obviously better than the mac airs screen but i have heard people saying that the retina on a 13" screen makes text hard to read when you max the resolution, is this true? can anyone confirm? and the macpro im looking at had a 256 ssd the same as the mac air im looking at.

so the only difference between the ones im looking at is the pro has 8gb of ram (vs 4 on the air), retina display on the pro but i really like the design of the air and i like the portability of it but is their going to be that much of a difference between 4/8gb of ram if im mainly just browsing the web on it, watching movies and general computer things? (like i said before no gaming/video editing but i may occasionally use photoshop but not very often and infact photoshop is probably the most intensive thing i will be doing on it so out of the the air is still a better choice considering im not doing much on it bet the pro has a better display and twice as much ram?

i was originaly thinking of doing that but with the new macbooks airs you cant change components so that is a bummer...

I was talking about the Air vs. the regular, non-retina Pro. Those models are basically depreciated and I wouldn't recommend even looking at them. From now on in this topic, when I say Pro, I mean the Retina Pro.

I would suggest going with 8GB RAM for whatever you get because it's something that can't be upgraded. As the years pass, you probably won't want to be stuck with 4. The Air has an option to upgrade to 8GB for $100 and it's likely worth it. If you can afford the 13" Pro, though, I suggest you get one because as far as I'm concerned, they're the best laptops you can buy, bar-none. You shouldn't have any readability issues because of the scaling software which is expalined [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] . Basically, you can make it read like a lower-resolution display and you can change the size of UI elements.

If you can I'd recommend the macbook pro with retina display, it's a very nice computer, but it's very expensive.

Just throwing it out there I have a macbook pro (that's what I'm on right now) and I love it. Problem free for 4 years and its still running strong. I'd say get the pro, because to be honest, who cares about the weight of a computer? That's the only major pro of the air. Oh and if you use it for school microsoft word is a plus, because whatever mac uses is awful. Hope this helps!
