They probably haven't gone anywhere, they have probably been a Gold member and changed their name. Normally I see the same friends list with different names.
EDIT: If you have friends/the people you used to know on here, check your messages and relate them to that. e.g, if one of the people was to be called 'GhostlySheep11' and you know the messages you used to send him/her, find the message and his/her name could be different, e.g 'GhostSheep12', simple but that's happened to me before.

Eh not really, I mostly talked to them on Xbox, but since I sold my xbox and became some elitist for world of warcraft, I have lost a lot of friends and my most of my life -_-
