Well guys, im currently planning on majoring in Mechanical Engineering, with a minor in Electrical engineering. I was looking to purchase this new laptop, to last me through college and was wondering if i could get some feedback from you guys on laptops. Im not too knowledgable about computing, but i do still know few things, as i hang out with a bunch of computer people, but there more bias as they have expensive gaming rigs. my basic use of these, is to be able to bring around near like a tablet, but carry in a backpack, able to write down my thoughts and designs on the spot, and able to easily run any of the autodesk programs and solidworks, and ofcoruse multiple 3d software windows at once. I already own all the autodesk files, as i recieved them at a student discount. I forgot to state that i already own a 1tb external drive which holds alot of my documents and completed engineering briefs, and presentations already on it, and i plan to continue saving those to this drive.

heres a majority of the details

ive looked into alienware, but i really like the ability to hand write and draw my designs directly onto my laptop. Its like having one of those smart boards that saves your design files to your computer that they use in engineering brainstorms at intel, etc.

OP, that's exactly what you want. All I can say, really, I've been eying the X230T for months now myself.

thanks for the feedback, may i ask how the graphics are held up, as the laptop doesnt actually have a graphics card but bridge graphics through intel 4000 HD

You won't get a tablet PC with powerful graphics, but the HD 4000 is surprisingly capable and the mobile i7 will handle just about anything. If you need powerful workstation graphics, you should look at the W530.

I did look at the other series, but i really like the ability that its a convertible laptop, so i can use it to handwrite and draw in my own engineering ideas and rough designs. Unless the w530 is capable of that too, but when i looked at it, it didnt look like it was.

It's not. Sounds like the X230Ts features are more important to you, so I'd get it. I'll be using it for drawing and taking notes in class if I ever get around to buying the thing.
