Go to Xbox.com
1) first login your Silver account with your payment method.
2) Then Click "My xbox" and on the alternating panels you will see a red picture offering an xbox live trial
3) Click on it then Accept it
4) Enjoy your free 1 Month Trial!

Once again -
You need Paying Method
Silver Account - NOT GOLD ACCOUNT!
Also turn off your Auto-Renewal in your account settings.

Or go on your Xbox make a silver account and then upgrade to live. When it asks you for your payment option I believe if you hit B it will offer you a free month and you don't have to enter a payment option it worked for me.

That only works if you haven't allready used all three free months. The way it works is:
On one NEW console you can create three different silver accounts, and do what you did and receive ONE free month of Xbox GOLD, after three, every profile you create and intend to do this will be silver. UNLESS, you send your Xbox 360 console off for repairs and they give you a new one, or you buy a new one. Also, even if you use a new HDrive or MU, or such, it still won't work, because each Xbox has a Serial Number that XBOX LIVE can detect for many reasons, such as protection against exploits such as these.
