Ram has nothing to do with it

Im able to play MC smoothly on a laptop
Heres the specs-

1 GB Ram
256 Mb Video Memory
7gb HDD (256mb Free)


It runs just fine, so its nothing to do with his ram.
You need more video memory if anything, and make sure things arent installed and running 24/7 such as skype and stuff.

Definitely install OptiFine. I have 4 GB RAM as well and it runs so smoothly. I get 50+ FPS with a texture pack. Also, you can give more RAM to java - [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Install 64bit Java.
Lower your Render to Normal.
Smooth lighting off.
