FLCL (Fooly Cooly)

Episodes - 6

"Nothing exciting ever happens here." Is something the main character, Naota Nandaba says in the first episode. And I suppose he's right, provided he gets runover by a bright yellow scooter and launched across a bridge by a rocket-powered bass guitar in the first 30 seconds, not to mention the massive iron steaming in the hills around town. Normal, right? I can't begin to explain why FLCL is a masterpiece, except that it isn't even close to a masterpiece... But maybe that's what makes it a masterpiece?

More than often, anime thrives on the ability to make anything possible and immerse you in it, regardless of its "realism". We have Gundam units protecting colonies in space, basketball players shooting full court, and a rubber pirate adventuring on the sea, none of which we really ever question. FLCL is the exception though, I often found myself saying "why...." or "how..." but that's a good thing in my book. I mean, it made more sense than The End of Evangelion but I often found myself questioning the meaning of my existence while watching Fooly Cooly. FLCL is created by Studio Gainax, of which many of you know I fanboy from Neon Genesis Evangelion and Gunbuster, but I didn't really walk in with a bias from it. This is mostly because FLCL is unlike any of their prior works or really...any work for that matter.

Similar to Evangelion, FLCL is a show where it's only after the fact that you realize what some of the stuff meant. There's an entire episode where he talks about "not being able to swing his favorite baseball bat", which is ultimately a metaphor for masturbation. You see in the long run, FLCL is actually a coming-of-age story, for a kid with some weird circumstances and even weirder people around him. The art style changes on purpose every few minutes, whether it be awful inconsistent Gundam animation, bright flashes and poses only comparable to JoJo's, or even a scene in complete homage to South Park. I can't forget the music either. It was solely done by a group in Japan called The Pillows, who have a fantastic garage-band sound and sorta remind me of The Pixies or Car Seat Headrest. The sound and artwork were all there, but what about the plot.

I can't tell you anything about the plot honestly. I seriously cannot. I've watched FLCL three times, and still have no idea what really happens, yet I gave it a 10/10 on my personal MAL account. In my book, FLCL is a masterpiece because it's a testament that anime can do whatever the hell it wants, and throw absolutely random things in that you can still pull symbolism out of. Similar to basically every other Gainax work, it's a 50/50 split where you either love it or absolutely hate it. I don't know, something about watching a robot sprout out of a boy's forehead through a time-space rift between the two halves of his brain to fight a rogue GameBoy adored by a delinquent girl to awesome rock music is just more than enough for me to piss myself laughing and enjoying it all at the same time.

It's only 6 episodes, so just try it out. The subs and dubs are both absolutely horrendous by the way, but that gives it the oddest charm. It also gives me one of my favorite images of all time: [spoil] [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Rating - 9.0/10 (will heavily vary)

I'm confused on what you meant by the subs and dubs are absolutely horrendous, this is something that has always confused me. When I watch a subbed anime, the subs are meant to match what the character is saying in Japanese correct? So how can the subs be bad? Are there different subtitles depending on where I watch the anime? I know that dubbed anime's sometimes use different english words to match the characters lips, but the sub comment confused me. Care to explain?

As in the voice acting is honestly awful in both the sub and the dub. Though subs themselves can also be bad. For example, like 6 sub groups did Attack on Titan when it aired, and if you did different ones they'd all spell names different and would be "Scout Corps" or "Recon Corps" or "Scouting Corp" and other variations. Also, some sub groups try to localize some content, which loses context.

I mean, dubs butcher things much more (in terms of pronunciation and poor word choices), but yes in this case I was talking about voice acting. Make sense?

90% yes. But I'm lost on where you said 6 sub groups did Attack on Titan. So which sub group is the main sub group? I watched AOT on Netflix because I didn't really want to watch it at all but it was there, was that the main sub group?

6 different fansubs did AoT. It was a choice on who everyone went with. I chose Evetaku. Titans > eotens (gg). Since you watch it on netflix it was the Official subs from funimation.

Just as Acty said, multiple "sub groups" will translate and put subtitles on the anime as they are released in Japan. These groups like DeadFish, UTW-Mazui, HorribleSubs, MMM, Underwater, etc are putting out the anime to compete with the other sub groups for site traffic, I guess I could make an example by saying a lot of YouTube gamers playing the same game and trying to get more subscriptions than each other.

These sub groups, depending on who is translating for them, will translate different words or interpret it differently (Japanese is quite heavy on contextual things, unlike in English where we have words and preterite for every single tense/scenario.), so that will change how they take it.

For example, "Sono hito wa takai desu ne" could be taken as "That guy is tall don't you think?" or "That guy is expensive don't you think?". A lot of their adjectives and verbs have multiple meanings dependent on context. See how it's easy to miss-translate to an extent?

Was that a better explanation?

Much better. But how do I know which sub group I'm watching? Like what if I only want the official sub groups how will I know that's who I'm watching?

Do you download, stream, or wait for netflix to have it to watch your anime? If you download then it should have the fansubs tag at the beginning or end of the file name. Ex: [FFF], [UTW], or [Underwater] etc. If you stream it's most likely the first uploaded which would be CrunchyRoll's subs. Netflix will be using the officials subs from the animtaion studio.

I stream which means I guess I use CrunchyRoll's subs. Are they official? As long as they aren't fansubs I'm okay. I like CrunchyRoll.

It will generally be the streaming site's own subs. And actually, Crunchyroll's are easily one of the most hated subs haha, they've messed a lot up. Fansubs are much much quicker and generally more reliable, provided you torrent. Some fansub groups will put the subbed video out an hour after its initial airing in Japan, while sites like CR take like 6 hours then block it for anyone without a membership.

They're one of the most hated? Well I've never tried any other subs other than Streaming and netflix, so I don't know about fansubs. Should I try using fansubs instead? If so which ones?

If you have decent connection and not scared of torrenting (some people are, ya never know, but I've never heard of anyone getting nailed for torrenting anime unless it's like a Studio Ghibli thing). The fansubs vary from anime to anime, certain fansub groups only do a couple shows a season. Personally I like UTW and Underwater, but it's a lot of preference. MAL actually has a section at the bottom if you've never noticed that shows what fansubs are highest rated for that particular show.

Well as of right now, I don't mind Crunchyrolls subs so I'll stick to streaming. If by chance however the subs ruin the anime for me, I'll consider torrenting. Thanks for the help man, and -Actives too.

Okay so Evigishki I decided to at least test your opinion on fansubs. Now I've watched half of Log Horizon already, I'm on episode 16. I decided to download season 1 from a fansub group called HorribleSubs. Are they any good? Will it make the show experience worse or better for me?
