I just finished Deadman Wonderland.
Great Anime
(but if you didnt like ending of it try manga. Its same story but longer and ending is better)

I can tell you right now that Katawa Shoujo is pretty much the perfect entry level VN. And it's also free, so that's a nice perk. I also highly recommend it, I'll try writing a review or two at some point if I can find time. I'll get back to you on others though in a little bit.

The thing I was holding back on with Katawa Shoujo to put on the list was the concept. As per the rest of the whole guide, it's aimed mainly towards people new to J-Culture, and well, adding a VN where you bone the hell out of girls with various disabilities is a little hard to get people started on.

It's almost like teaching children not to talk to creepy guys on the internet and then making them talk to NASA.

Ok, good point.. Hmm, I guess Clannad and Kanon would probably be my other suggestions I can personally vouch for, as well as Steins;Gate. Other good starter VN's I've seen people recommend are Planetarian, Saya no Uta, Kira Kira, Yume Miru Kusuri, True Remembrance and Narcissu. I also like Phenomeno a lot.

Well for Visual Novels apart from what you have already listed

Rewrite
G-senjou no Maou
ef - a fairy tale of the two.
Little Busters!
Maji de Watashi ni Koishinasai!
Maji de Watashi ni Koishinasai! S
Sharin no Kuni, Himawari no Shoujo
CrossChannel
Kamidori Alchemy Meister
Yume Miru Kusuri

Those are some that i would rate pretty highly. While i have played a lot more i either didn't include those with a weird or messed up concept or that i rated 7/10 or lower
