I heard about this guy a while back, but like everyone else, I ignored him, but he died not long ago, about the same time Steve Jobs did, in 2011.

His name was Dennis Ritchie, he is the creator of the C programming language, and from what computers run on, without C; there would be no C++, no Objective-C, No Windows, No Mac, No Unix, No PS3, No Xbox, No Photoshop, No FL. Studio.

When Steve Jobs died, millions of people spread the word, and acted like he was the greatest hero in the world, when Dennis Ritchie died, he was not even mentioned in the news, or spoken about.

He deserves more respect

Reason why I'm posting in the programming section
Because if I post in the general discussion, people will just flame and post about how much they don't care, but if you like programming or coding, then I know you won't flame.

While I fully agree with this, saying there would be none of those products without the C Programming language is nonsense. If C were not created then the products mentioned would simply have been created using a different technology.

Yes, that is true! But it would be a major set-back for us in computers, if it would be created by another technology, how long would we have to wait for that technology to get here? And how different, better, or worse would the technology be?

Just as if Steve Jobs was never born, or never created the iOS/Mac ect...What would the technology be like now? Different, better, or worse? We can thank this guy, for making technology what it is now.

Ok, this was definitely in the news. I found out from the front page of CNN. But yes, without him, OSX likely wouldn't exist, or at least wouldn't be like it is today.

Neither would Windows. Actually without C life would be very different. C for a while in the past, was one of the most used languages, and most operating systems are comprised of C, C++, and some sort of ASM. Also a lot of tablets extensively use C.

Actually it isn't nonsense. Without the development of C, none of those products would exist. Similar products maybe, but not the same...and likely not as good. It is a safe assumption that without Dennis Ritchie, the world of Computing as we know it would be a lot less sophisticated.

OS X more directly, as it's based off of the Unix kernel. "A lot of tablets extensively use C" - care to explain? Do you mean as the language for applications built for the OS or...? Saying that they extensively use C is a little silly, as most all kernels are written in C.

Earlier Windows were also based on the Unix kernel. Also how would it it be silly, if it is just that? lol. Also considering Denis was one of the original authors of Unix why wouldn't it be made in C?
