The invite doesn't come to your Xbox, it comes to your elite account. If you can't sign in Elite (either on the computer or Elite on Xbox), you won't be able to accept it. If you can, you can apply on either or. If you forgot your password, just use the password recovery. Invites rarely go through, but applications always do, so I'd prefer it that way.
