Horizon_Aura wrote Hey guys, quick question. What determines whether a pair of headphones need to be powered by an external amplifier? Because I'm now stuck between the Audio Technica M50's and the Custom One Pro. The only problem with the custom one pro at the moment is that the apparently leak a little sound, and I can't have them do that. I've been told HFI 580's are good, but the cable is completely off putting, even if I can braid it. Can the M50's be powered by a phone comfortably?

Thanks again guys, would give more rep if I had more

The term is "sensitivity," which is measured in dB per milliwatt of input. Higher sensitivity = easier to power. My M50s get plenty loud from any source, so no worries there. Mine also have the coiled cable, which is just no good for portability. The number one thing I would want in a portable headphone in terms of design is a removable cable. Even if they leak a tad more sound, that alone would make the Custom One the better buy. I'd like to sell my M50s for $80 and get the Custom One because they seem pretty much ideal for me and very reasonably priced.

Disturbingly overpriced. For that much get the JVC FXT-90.

MEElectronics M31 is quite bassy. It should be okay for you. If you can stretch your budget by $10, the Xeport 5010 is superior in every way except soundstage and airiness.

I'm currently debating between the DT880 600ohm, Q701, and AD900. The AD900 is the cheapest, but seems to be the biggest risk. The DT880 might not have enough mids which is a MAJOR issue, and the Q701 seems to be the most polarizing. I didn't like the K701's treble when I tried it, but apparently the Q701 fixes it kinda and now I have more power.

Any other open, bass-neutral suggestions at $250 used?

HD600 might work. I hear a lot of engineers use them.

I'm getting the HD650's soon after, and I figured that the HD600 be kind of redundant.

Eighty bucks? Hey, maybe I'll actually buy these instead of just saying I intend to! It seems to have a signature unlike anything I have or have ever heard, so it's perfect. I'm going to try to make this happen.
