Ultrasone makes the perfect headphones for you. They fold up, and the Pro series has a removable cable. They're built well and good-looking, as well. Some I would look at are the HFI-580, HFI-780, and Pro 750. The Pro 900 is another option, but it requires amplification, which complicates things a bit. They all have a "V" sound signature, which means the lows and highs are emphasized with recessed mids. The bass is to die for!

If you can deal with an open headphone, the Superlux HD668B is awesome for what you pay. Otherwise, I would go for the Shure SRH240 or the Panasonic HTF600.

These will make you rethink your stance on Beats. Thanks for being open to other suggestions!

Ultrasones are made for you. They're great basshead headphones, and they're very portable for full-size cans. I personally think they look awesome as well, but that's up to you to decide. You can afford the Pro 750 at ~$270, but you'll also like the lower-end models like the HFI-780 ($150) and HFI-580 ($120). The Audio Technica Pro 700 Mk. II is also a bass cannon, as well as the M-Audio Q40. When I get the headphone guide in the OP back up, you can look through it and see the other options, too.

Budget: $60 CDN

Music preference/genre: J-Pop, J-Rock, Mandopop

Type/form factor and portability: either over-ear/ straight down IEMs (microphonics shouldn't be too bad) or circumaural headphones.

Sources: Sansa Clip+ Rockboxed, LG G2X Voodoo, Walkman E438F

I have the CX300s, CKM55s, M6s, iM-590s, ProAlphas, and A151s, but I've always found the treble extension to be very lacking with either roll-off or grain at the top. I've also been left wanting for a wider soundstage. I do like the detail of the mids and extension of the bass in the A151, but its unsuitability for electronic instruments in general and its treble roll-off have left me disappointed.

Also, I've read through every page of this thread and have found your opinion of Beats, Skullcandy and other "sub-standard" headphones to be very polarizing. Yes the majority of them do underperform in their price bracket but the Beats have been noted by many Head-fiers to not sound as terrible as you would exaggerate them to be, and Skullcandy has been applauded by enthusiasts for their new lineup. I understand the need to educate consumers about price/performance ratios, but isn't there a way to do that without insulting them and potentially scaring them away?

How about posting actual frequency graphs for all IEMs that you and ishcabible have to back them up? Add the Beats just for reference.

How about a list of the good IEMs and headphones that you and the other two own in the first post? And how about posting actual frequency graphs for all of them (including all the Beats) to back them up?

Have you seen the hype for the Vsonic GR06? It looks like it would do it for you. I've heard the soundstage is pretty good, and that it's unbeatable for the price. It's also said to have the neutral yet natural sound of the GR07. I think I'm going to buy in myself and get a pair. Also, it comes with about a million different tips.

The way I judge all headphones is on their price to performance ratio. Sure, the Beats may sound decent, but for the price, they are terrible. I do my best not to scare people away with numbers, but still inform them. I spell it out in a way they can understand, and FR graphs aren't something that's relevant or even interpretable by the average consumer. I think the measurements like that would turn people away more than anything.

I've acknowledged Skullcandies new advances and I believe I've recommended Aviators before. I'm excited to see where they go from here!

Unfortunately, my actual first-hand experience is very limited and I don't own many headphones. I'm working on broadening my experience, but money's an issue. I'd love to be prolific, but can't as it is. I have Klipsch S4s from when they were hyped and before I got into headphones, as well as Koss Portapros, Aiaiai TMA-1, Grado SR80is, and Audio Technica M50s (again from that period of hype).

Hmm I've been wondering what's with all the hype about the GR06s recently, but I never bothered to look them up. So they sound similar to the much-vaunted GR07s eh?

As for the graphs, you could have a table with the dB and Hz ranges, and explain what bass, mids, and trebles can be roughly defined as. A lot of people are visual learners, and I think they will be VERY surprised when they see the Beats frequency graph

Oh yes, and are there any circumaural headphones that will satisfy me at this price point?

From the reviews, I've heard that they're the little brother of the GR07 and sound very similar. They might be a little bit harder to get a hold of, but it shouldn't be long. Before the supply gets sorted out.

I've thought about including some FR graphs for notable headphones, but I've been spending my time on a comprehensive guide that I still need to edit back into the OP. Maybe I'll get around to that soon.

Look at the Superlux HD668B. They're open, but awesome for the price. Again, very popular on Head-Fi. I have heard the treble is a little harsh and needs to be rolled off with an EQ, but after that they're supposedly incredible. There's at least one good article on these.

For bass yes but for everything else it falls a little short. A lot of people have complained that the bass is too overpowering, so I guess it's not for me. YMMV.
