Hello TTG! Today I am going to show you how to Root, Flash Open Recovery (or AOR), and flash custom ROMs to your phone.

First: What is a ROM you ask? A ROM is a build of a version of Android that a developer on a site such as XDA Developers has made for your phone. They take the code from the Android site, and create a ROM that suits your phone. There are also organizations such as CyanogenMOD, the main group, which create the ROMs. But sometimes your phone isn't supported. So. Developers at XDA are constantly changing the code to suit your phone!

Ok, lets move on to step 1

Rooting your Device!

EDIT: The following is only useful for: Droid, Droid X, Milestone, or Nexus One.

-Rooting your device is very simple. All you need to do is download and transfer the .apk file for Universal Androot, which is located here: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] . ly/oGkLK0

-After transferring and installing to your phone, open up the program. The screen should look something like this:
[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

-Pick one of the options from the drop down menu, depending on which version of Android you have, and click Root/Go Root. It should finish, and you will have successfully rooted your device!

EDIT: This next app is for: HTC users with an Aria, Desire, Droid Incredible, EVO 4G, Hero, or Wildfire/Buzz.

-If you use one of those apps above you will need Unrevoked. Located Here: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] You will have to pick you're phone from one of those picture. Click it, and download for whatever OS you are running. If you do need help, resort to this video because I do not own one of the phone stated above: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Now for Step 2, Flashing Vulnerable Recovery.

Installing the .sbf file, Vulnerable Recovery!

-First, you will want to connect your device to your PC/Mac and let it install any drivers necessary. You may need to install these drivers for the task up ahead: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] . ly/nTK3f8 Just follow the on-screen instructions to download.

-Then download RSDLite, located here: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] . ly/9H9JJV Then install. Then you will need the Vulnerable Recovery .sbf file, located here: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] . ly/am1eVY And unzip/extract.

-Get RSDLite opened up, and on the image here where is says Filename, and the "..." button, hit that button, and open up the Vulnerable Recovery File from earlier: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

-Make sure your device is shown in the area below, and hit start! Then if it is successful, you have flashed Vulnerable Recovery right!

Step 3, getting Open Recovery on your phone!

Lets get started on Step 3!

-First download Open Recovery to your computer: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] . ly/gB6pvn Extract/Unzip.

-Then place the extracted contents, OpenRecovery folder, and update.zip, on your memory, just like that, not in any other folders. Then reboot into recovery on your phone. If you do not know how to, look here: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] . ly/jOzHt2 Scroll down until you see the methods on how to boot into Recovery.

-Once there, you will see a list of options, hit apply update.zip. Or Install, then choose update.zip. If all goes right, it will say, Welcome to OpenRecovery, or something like that!

Step 4, Flashing a ROM!

This is the fun part! !!! MAKE SURE YOU MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP OF YOUR CURRENT SYSTEM. GO TO NANDROID IN OR, AND HIT BACKUP, THEN BACKUP ALL!!!

-First you need to determine what ROM you want. Which Android Version. Well. It would be to hard to post links to every Android phone. So. Go to the XDA Forum: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] . ly/b56IPR. Then scroll down til you find your phone, and hit "(Your Phone Name)Android Development. And then any thread starting with [ROM], basically is, well, a ROM. Download the ROM zip which is on the first post made by the author. There may be update files as well so keep an eye out!

-Then once the zip file is downloaded you will have to put it on your SD Card. But make sure you know if it is a Nandroid Backup, or straight update file. Read the thread for details. If it is an update file, and not Nandroid, make your way to the OpenRecovery folder on your SD Card, and go to the updates folder. Place it there! And if it is a Nandroid, see if there is a folder labeled, Nandroid on your card, if not. Make one, then make a folder inside of it named: openrecovery. Place it there.

-Then disconnect phone from computer, and boot into recovery. If you are installing an update, then go to Apply Update, and find the .zip file you placed on the phone moments ago. Let it do its thing. If your restoring a Nandroid backup, go to Nandroid, and Restore, and pick the folder you placed moments ago on the SD Card. Restore all. And after those steps your ROM should be installed. But make sure before installing or restoring anything, you've done a Nandroid backup, and Wipe/Data Factory Reset! Or else the ROM wont work!

-There are a few more things to install though, if there were update files for your ROM, apply them after applying your ROM. And you will need to install Google Apps because your ROM may or may not include The Android Market. This file is located here: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] . ly/qzrLNn but make note that this Google Apps file is for CyanogenMOD 7 ROMs only! CM7 ROMs are Android 2.3s. Gingerbread. And you may need your country's Radio files, these are what make you get service! You will probably need to locate you're Baseband Radio files for yourself, seeing as that they are different for all phones. So go to XDA, and search, [Radio] and you should get multiple threads and should be able to find your phone. So you'll to put the Google Apps, and the Radio files in the OpenRecovery>Updates folder, then update in OpenRecovery. After That you should be good! Reboot phone, and there you have it!

I hope this Tutorial helped you. This was my first big one, and it took a long time! Please Thank the topic if it helped, and ask me anything if you need help. I may not be able to help since I'm only familiar with Milestone/Droid, but I can sure try.

Plus! I AM IN NO WAY RESPONSIBLE IF YOUR BRICK YOUR PHONE. THIS IS A DECISION MADE BY YOU. Just need to put that ;) Happy Modding!

EDIT: Since this site is uptight about links, just the space out between every "." and "ly in every link. Mods, don't close this cause of that, look yourselves, I'm just trying to help here.

Yeah, at least tell people that certain phones need specific rooting tools. What works on your won't necessarily work on someones Evo or Incredible, which use the Unrevoked application.

Stop flaming the OP. All this needs is the kind of phone this tut is for. He did a fine job explaining things (although I didn't read it in its entirety) and put lots of time into it. It just needs a little adjustment! Oz_x_MaJikz doesn't know much about this stuff either as evidenced by his posts in topic with the unboxing of the Toshiba Thrive.

He also sounds very conceited, I would just ignore him. I hope this topic does get attention because it honestly deserves it.

+rep and thanked OP!
