HOOT

By: Carl Hiaasen

It all starts in present in a small city on the school bus to Trace Middle School. I

do think that the book could of taken place in a place but not a different time. I think this

because the book could of really taken place in any city. If the book took place in a

different time then everything would be different because there would of been different

ways of life.

The book is told in first person point of view. i know that Hoot is told in first

person point of view because in the book it uses the word I. The book is told through the

eyes of police Officer Delinko.

My favorite character in the novel Hoot is Roy. The character Roy is my favorite

character because he is brave at times and scared at others. Roy is brave when he

punches Dana Matherson. Roy is scared when he hears that Dana id looking for him

after school so he tries to sneak out the back way of the school.

Dana Matherson is my least favorite character. Dana is my least favorite

character because he is a big jerk and likes to pick on kids just so he thinks hes cool. I

say Dana is a jerk because he is always trying to hurt Roy.

The character Dana Matherson reminds me of a kid that i know named Nathan
Birdwell. I think that Nathan reminds me of the character Dana because Dana is a jerk

that picks on people and thats what Nathan does to kids at my school too.

I think that the author, Carl Hiaasen choose to tell this story for entertainment.

The main idea that Carl wants us to remember is give everyone a chance. i say that

because if Roy didnt give Beatrice a chance then Dana would of beat Roy to death. But

since Roy gave her a chance Beatrice came and pulled Dana off of Roy.

The title Hoot connects to the book perfectly. i know this because in the end of

the book Roy saves all the owls. Owls make a sound that sounds like Hoot. i do think

that the title Hoot was a great title for this book.

The incident in the book when Officer Delinko fell asleep in the car and his

windows got painted black. This incident reminds me of times when i have fallen asleep

when i needed to finish a project for school, just like what i did today on this project.

In the book there was a few parts that i thought were confusing. The main part

was when the german dog handler was talking because i could not understand what he

was saying because the book spelled it the way he was saying it.

The story did not end the way i expected it too because i thought that this book

would drag out the ending into the next book. I thought this because thats what most of

the books do that i read.

Overall i did like this piece of work a lot. I liked it because the book had a lot of

characters that reminded me of myself and of people that i know. Not only did it remind

me of people i know it also entertained me throughout the whole book.

If i was an english teacher, I would want to share this piece of work with my

class. I would like to because I like the book and it would be a good start to get the ball

rolling with everyone reading before all the really hard reading starts.
