Notice: A TTG member has brought to my attention that if you have Megakey installed on your computer your iDevice will not show up.

iPod/iPhone not showing up in iTunes?

When you connect your iPod touch to your computer, an iPod touch icon should appear in iTunes in the left column under Devices. But if it doesn't, this troubleshooting assistant can help.

Verify system requirements

Make sure your computer has the following:

-USB 2.0 port
- [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

and one of the following operating systems:

-Mac OS X version 10.4.11 or later
-Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 3 or later
-Windows Vista Home Premium, Business, Enterprise, or Ultimate Edition

If your computer does not meet these requirements, you will need to upgrade your computer before using iPod touch.

Recharge iPod touch

If iPod touch is very low on power or if the battery is fully depleted, it can take up to 10 minutes to appear in iTunes.

Use a high-power USB port such as the one on your computer, or use your iPod touch AC adapter.
If your iPod touch's display shows a battery image with the red section flashing three times then goes blank, it means that iPod touch is not receiving power to charge.
If the iPod touch battery is extremely low on power, the display may be blank for up to two minutes before one of the low-battery images appears.

Note: Make sure you are using USB to charge. Accessories that use FireWire to charge are not supported with iPod touch.

Check USB connections

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Connect iPod touch to a USB port that is built into the computer instead of the keyboard or an external USB hub.

If iPod touch still doesn't appear in iTunes, try a different USB port.

Restart iPod touch

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

To restart iPod touch, first turn iPod touch off by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button until a red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider and iPod touch will turn off after a few moments.

Next, turn iPod touch on by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

Is iPod touch not responding? To reset iPod touch, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least 10 seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
