Modern Warfare 3 to be banned in the UK?

Hidden:
[size=12]Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3's Reveal Trailer, which shows scenes of terrorism on the London Underground, is reported to have led to calls for the game to be banned, reports the Daily Mail. The Dail Mail is comparing the London Underground scenes to the 7/7 terrorist attacks in London, with those affected unhappy about the likeness found in Activision's guaranteed smash hit.Vivienne Pattison of Mediawatch UK has "concerns" because "these games are hyper-real," adding MW3 "is in incredibly poor taste".This isn't the first time Call of Duty has skirted with controversy. Modern Warfare 2 was heavily criticised by some for its No Russian level, which allowed players to shoot civilians at an airport while taking on the role of a terrorist.Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will be released worldwide on November 8.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 shows a blast on the Tube with chilling echoes of the 2005 London horror.

A trailer of game footage released yesterday also depicts a gun battle near Big Ben, and players will also see a dirty bomb attack on Parliament.

Last night victims of the 7/7 attacks, which killed 52 innocent people, called for MPs to ban the game, due to hit shops in November.

Sean Cassidy, whose son Ciaran, 22, died in the Piccadilly Line blast, raged: This is insensitive. What happened shouldnt be used as entertainment. This brings back bad memories for everybody, not just victims but people who travel on the Tube every day.

Lucy Cope from anti- violence group Mothers Against Guns added: This is horrendous, especially when London is on red alert. David Cameron should ban it from the shelves.

And Labour MP Keith Vaz said: I am appalled. The exploding Tube carriages are likely to cause distress. We should consider a ban.

But makers Activision defended the game, which also shows a 9/11-style air attack on New Yorks skyscrapers.
A spokesman said: The scenes are entirely fictional and not intended to recreate any historical events.

Personally i think that they should not ban mw3 in the UK because alot of people play on it in the UK.

Vivienne Pattison, spokesman for campaign group Mediawatch UK, said: I have concerns as these games are hyper-real and take place in a landscape we are familiar with. In light of the fact we have just had the 7/7 inquests, it is in incredibly poor taste.'
One reviewer at gaming website kotaku.com described the latest instalment in the Call Of Duty series: 'Players take on the role of an SAS operative who is tasked with stopping a delivery of weapons of mass destruction at a London dockyard.
'A gun battle ensues, and the agents are chased through the London subway. The mission culminates with a series of unmarked trucks exploding in front of the House of Parliament, releasing a deadly chemical agent.'
Activision, who make the game, said: 'Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is a fictional action game aimed at mature adults and set in World War Three. The scenes in the game are entirely fictional and are not intended to recreate any historical events.'

MW2 FINALLY GETTING SECURITY UPDATES SOON ON ALL PLATFORMS

Hidden:

finity Wards creative strategist Robert Bowling, aka fourzerotwo announced Monday that Modern Warfare 2 will be seeing a new title update addressing security issues that plague online play across all platforms.

PlayStation 3 MW2 players arent alone however as the PC and 360 have seen their fair share of exploits too of which I can attest. In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Bowling blames the MW2 exploits on the PS3. The only solution however since then according to Bowling was to only play with friends.

If you are concerned about playing with players who are hacking, I encourage you to play exclusively with friends by utilizing the party or private match options in Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty 4 to avoid such players as much as possible until this issue is resolved by Sony.

That wasnt much of a solution since interest in MW2 online is fading fast for other players with Black Ops, Bad Company 2, and other shooters. Infinity Ward stated then that they will not be soley relying on platform holders to stop hackers from ruining future projects and complimented Treyarch with their security work thus far.

Let me assure you, while we are very reliant on Sony updating their firmware and security to address the core problem of this issue, we are looking at every option available to us to help any user affected.

The latest patch for Modern Warfare 2 has finished production and is now going through internal quality assurance. This new title update will address security issues that have affected online play.

We plan to release this update for all platforms (Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and PC). No release date is set at this time. Once an ETA is established, it will be posted here.

In addition to the security updates, this patch will also address a small geo exploit on the map Fuel, which players exploited in order to get inside a rock on the outskirts of the map.

Microsoft Confirms Tackling Modded Xbox 360 Consoles

Hidden:
While there are Microsoft customers that indulge in the illegal use of pirated software without so much as slap on the hand from the company, others are less fortunate. Larry Hryb, Microsofts director of programming for Xbox Live, has confirmed officially that it is actively banning Xbox 360 owners that have modified their consoles in order to accommodate pirated games from Xbox LIVE.

In addition, Microsoft is cracking down on modded Xbox 360 consoles, although it is permitting users to run bootlegged copies of Windows, even providing Critical security updates for releases of the operating system that have been labeled as pirated by the Windows Genuine Advantage mechanism. The Redmond company indicated that it would not stand for consoles to be modified in order for their owners to play pirated games (an operation dubbed modding) and that it would tackle the phenomenon by banning the devices from the Xbox LIVE community.

Our commitment to combat piracy and support safer and more secure gameplay for the more than 20 million members of our Xbox LIVE community remains a top priority. All consumers should know that piracy is illegal, and that modifying their Xbox 360 console to play pirated discs, violates the Xbox LIVE terms of use, will void their warranty and result in a ban from Xbox LIVE, Hryb explained.

One segment of Xbox 360 customers can in this regard, be affected by Microsofts bans even though they had nothing to do with the actual modding of a console. Customers that purchase second hand Xbox 360 consoles previously banned for modding will not be able to take advantage of what Xbox LIVE has to offer.

The health of the video game business depends on customers paying for the genuine products and services they receive from manufacturers, retailers, and the third parties that support them. This would also be a good time to remind you that the warranty on an Xbox 360 console is not transferrable and if you purchase a used console that has been previously banned, you will not be able to connect to Xbox LIVE, Hryb added.

Warning! Microsoft Cracking Down on Naughty Gamer Mottos

Hidden:
A heads-up to those XBL customers who might be pushing the limits with their gamertag mottos...

It appears Microsoft has decided to crack down on naughty gamertag mottos, as I was recently suspended for my "Konichiwa, ****!" motto, which I've had since before the Xbox 360 launch. They should have banned me for spelling "konnichiwa" wrong.
The suspension seems to last a little over 24 hours.

Zewone also got banned recently for his motto, "called the hit oop".

I guess Microsoft has created some kind of script that will automatically check gamer mottos for all kinds of creative variations.

I think the ban is really unnecessary. Since Microsoft changed the mottos anyway, a simple warning email saying your next offence will result in a ban would have sufficed.

Microsoft cracks down on piracy with latest Xbox 360 update

Hidden:
Today, Microsoft released an update for the Xbox 360 which, according to the first users who downloaded it, includes a piracy check against popular video games like Halo and Call of Duty: Black Ops. The update also re-enables the Boot to disc option in the Xbox 360 Dashboard, something that was removed by Microsoft due to piracy concerns.

The update, according to sources, checks whether the copy of the game youre playing is legit and not pirated. If it is, the console will display a this disc cannot be recognized and your console will more than likely be marked down for a ban down the road.

Meanwhile, Major Nelson is noting on an update that Microsoft will be releasing tomorrow to Xbox.com, which updates the gamercard look and feel.

Additionally, on Thursday January 20th the Xbox.com team will ship an update that contains a small update to the Gamercards. Weve updated the Gamercard look and feel a bit and removed gamerzone from the card. Other than that, the same amount of information is on the card.

Report: Microsoft bans 1 million Xbox Live players

Hidden:
It's oh-so enticing: you find a copy of a brand new game like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on a pirate site and the temptation to download it is too strong.
Well, that temptation may have cost up to 1 million users of Microsoft's Xbox Live the ability to use that service. According to a report in InformationWeek, Microsoft has banned as many as a million players from Xbox Live for altering their consoles in order to play pirated versions of games.

This week, Activision's new Call of Duty was released, and InformationWeek speculated that because pirated versions of the game appeared on various sharing sites in advance of the release, the game's developer may have exhorted Microsoft to enact the bans.
"Xbox 360 consoles are equipped with digital rights management technologies designed to detect pirated software," InformationWeek wrote, "but some players have successfully 'modded,' or modified, their machines to circumvent DRM protections."
Even if someone has been banned, their Xbox will still play offline games, InformationWeek said. But it's not at all clear if the bans are permanent or if Microsoft will allow those who have been booted from Xbox Live to return at some point down the line.
In a statement Microsoft said its "commitment to combat piracy and support safer and more secure gameplay for the more than 20 million members of the Xbox Live community remains a top priority. All consumers should know that piracy is illegal and modifying their Xbox 360 console violates the Xbox Live terms of use, will void their warranty and result in a ban from Xbox Live. We can assure you that if an Xbox Live member follows the Xbox Live terms of use, purchased a retail copy of Modern Warfare 2 and played the game on an unmodified Xbox 360, no action will be taken."
And on the Xbox support page, Xbox Live Director of Programming Larry Hryb, aka Major Nelson, has addressed some of the circumstances that could lead to a player's being banned.
"Players who find their Gamertags banned from Xbox Live have wound up in that situation due to violations of the Xbox Live Terms of Use," Major Nelson wrote. "The Xbox Live team monitors players for not just cheating, but also for things like threats, racism, profanity, and just being an all around poor sport and ruining the game for others.
"When a Gamertag comes up as violating our policies for online behavior, the person who owns that Gamertag is punished by being banned from the service. Keep in mind, this isn't just a ban on a particular game. This is a ban on the Xbox Live service as a whole, so you won't be able to go online at all during your ban. Initially, you may be banned for a day, a week, or depending on severity, permanently! Kiss that $50 goodbye."

Microsoft to crack down on unauthorized Xbox 360 storage devices Microsoft to crack down on unauthorized Xbox 360 storage devices

Hidden:
Larry Hryb, Director of Programming for Xbox Live, has just posted on his Major Nelson Blog that, when the next Xbox Live update is rolled out, all unauthorized storage devices will no longer be compatible with the 360. This is the official word from his blog:

When Preview Program members start receiving the Xbox 360 system update next week, one of the changes is that unauthorized Memory Units will no longer work with the Xbox 360. If youve moved your profile or saved games onto one to back it up, youd better move it back onto an authorized Xbox 360 storage device prior to taking the update. If you continue to use an unauthorized Memory Unit after the update, you will not be able to access your stored profile or saved games.

If you need help identifying officially licensed Xbox 360 storage devices or accessories you can read more about the licensed accessories program on Xbox.com

So, if you currently own and have your data stored on a non-official storage device for your Xbox 360, it is highly advised that you take heed to this warning.

Microsoft is preparing to roll out this Xbox 360 dashboard update later this month. The internal memo written by a Microsoft tech support employee says the update will be released in stages from May 19 to May 30 "to ensure a high quality deployment." The update will add PayPal online payment services as a billing option. Users will reportedly be able to use the system to buy points, content, and pay for Xbox Live subscriptions.

The update will also introduce support for the new Xbox 360 game disc format which was rumored to be in the works a few months ago. The Avatar Kinect video chat application is also rumored to be released later on May 27.
