Release Date: 20/05/2011
Developed By: Team Bondi / Rockstar
Genre: Murder Mystery
Platform: Cross Platform
Age Restrictions: 18+

Synopsis
Amid the post-war boom of Hollywood's Golden Age, Cole Phelps, an LAPD detective is thrown headfirst into a city drowning in its own success. Corruption is rampant, the drug trade is exploding, and murder rates are at an all-time high. In his fight to climb the ranks and do whats right, Phelps must unravel the truth behind a string of arson attacks, racketeering conspiracies and brutal murders, battling the L.A. underworld and even members of his own department to uncover a secret that could shake the city to its rotten core. Using ground-breaking new animation technology that captures every nuance of an actors facial performance in astonishing detail, L.A. Noire is a violent crime thriller that blends breath-taking action with true detective work to deliver an unprecedented interactive experience. Search for clues, chase down suspects and interrogate witnesses as you struggle to find the truth in a city where everyone has something to hide.

Story
By utilising open investigation and interrogation skills you are required to thread together the pieces of various murders and crimes in order to promote yourself through the ranks of doughnut eaters while ultimately foiling the plots of sinister and unscrupulous criminal masterminds (I would've gotten away with it, if it hadn't been for those meddling kids... Scooby Dooby Doo!) all in a bid to atone for acts you yourself committed during the war.

Gameplay
L.A. Noire is built upon the famous GTA open-world engine allowing players the freedom of exploration throughout various aspects of 1940's LA. The city itself is an amazing feat of reconstruction allowing players to get lost in both the detail and the atmosphere of the period.
During the main story the slower paced, yet highly addictive and very fun, investigation and interrogation elements are nicely balanced by some faster paced action sequences in the way of car chases, fist and gun fights.
As with all Rockstar publications there's also an array of side quests and distractions that you can take part in along the way.

Graphics
The graphics resemble a polished GTA4 set, as the name of the game suggests, in film noire. This is emphasized by black and white lighting effects at cut scenes and a slick 40's narrative delivered by a gin drinkin' filterless cigarette smoking private d1ck "this city needs a new flat-foot like a thirsty man needs a drink of water". The city rendering is much faster than GTA and so far during playing I've noticed very little of those grey block buildings still being defined as you drive past them (which GTA was plagued by) these additions have obviously came at a price however as the game, on 360 at least, has been split into 3 disks (PS3 players can enjoy the extra couch time resulting from the additional capacity of a single Blu-ray disk).

Controls
The controls are GTA through and through. The button configuration may be slightly different, but I'm still on the fence as to whether this actually serves a functional purpose or if it's simply to try and retract from the feeling you get that this is essentially GTA in the 40's. Did I say that was a bad thing - if it's not broken don't fix it right!?
