take it to your retailer they should be able to do free data recovery, as well or just RMA for screen repair.
You could do the method of accessing your phone through linux but that is more of a pain then anything else, is the screen fully broken or just cracked but still turns on?

As above, best bet is to get the screen fixed. Chances are if you plan on taking it back to where you bought it from, they won't be able to do anything unless you get the screen fixed first. So I would recommend trying to get it repaired or even do it yourself.

Why do you need backup anyways can't you just get your screen your screen fixed then off you go?

Not worth the premium for a new screen and repair when warranty is worth more, as well as you could just ship it out and do a special request to keep data.

Android 5.0 + you have to be able to see your screen and pull the notification bar to choose what mode you want to do (charging, file transfer, import/export, midi) ETC.
