I have a Mid-year 2012 Macbook Pro, the last of its kind to allow for upgradeable RAM. Currently it is at 4 GB and I want to buy another 4GB card for a total of 8 GB which is the maximum allowance on my Macbook.

The questions:

Any particular brand that is reliable to purchase a 4GB card from?

Would I be able to do it myself or should I bring it in to a store? (The most "engineering" I've done has been opening up an xbox 360 to fix the "Open tray" error 5 years ago)

Is it worth it in the end? I won't be getting a new laptop anytime soon so I figured upgrading an old one is more economic.

Here are repair guides so you can see how easy it is to replace the memory:

You can go to Crucial Memory's site and they have a tool where you can put in your model information and they'll display memory which is guaranteed to work with your model. However you can just buy most SODIMM modules and they'll work, but some people report issues with certain sticks that are not on the QVL.

Also do not mix and match 4GB, its better to buy a fresh set of 8GB If you are unsure what you have now.

awesome, I almost made the mistake of mix and matching 4GB. I'm going to head to the computer store shortly and get Crucial 8gb.

Thank you

it is fairly easy, My laptop hard drive failed while I was at school. I purchased a SS Drive and upgraded the ram. I have a 2012 Mac too. The computer has never been faster ans run so smoothly. here are links to what I purchased.
