I myself have never used GIMP and therefore can't really tell you how to use it from a perspective of me actually having used the program. What I can tell you from being a designer myself and having seen others use it either on YouTube or sitting beside of me in class, it works mostly like Illustrator and Phostoshop just in a free, condensed form compared to them. YouTube tutorials and Google Tuts will be your best help in learning the program as well as just devoting some time to it and playing around with the program itself and learning how to use it.
