In CS GO there are Competitive and Casual game modes:

In competitive it's 5v5 basically like search and destroy if you have ever played that on any call of duty. You spawn as a team on either one side of the map either Terrorist side where you have the bomb and must plant it on either A or B site or you spawn on counter terrorists where you must defend the bomb sites.
After winning 10 competitive games you will get ranked depending on your skill level, you can go up in ranks from winning or down from losing.

Here is a list of the rankings:

In casual wins and losses don't count towards any rank. there are gamemodes like deathmatch, demolition, arms race (which is a gun game type match)

as for you buying guns you buy them with in game money you earn during matches. You can buy skins with irl money but its not necessary they will just make your guns look pretty.

CS GO is probably one of my favorite games and I am sure you will enjoy it very much.

In Competitive their are actually two gamemodes, unlike Call of Duty the game modes are based on the map. The two gamemodes are Bomb Scenario Mission, as explained is pretty much Search and Destroy in the Call of Duty franchise and there is the Hostage Mission where the CT[Counter-Terrorists] have to take the Hostages based around the map, then take them back to their CT[Counter-Terrorists] base to rescue them without the T[Terrorists] stopping them.
So maps like; Insertion, Office,
Those maps on Competitive are Hostage Missions
Maps like; Dust II, Nuke, Mirage,
Those maps are Bomb Scenario Missions.
