Sorry, I don't know if thers a "very easy" way to root any Nexus. I would do some research on Youtube. They have a lot of helpful videos there. Most roots are complicated and can take some time. Sorry

You can A: try reinstalling the toolkit because it does work. Also make sure you have the right toolkit for your nexus 7 or B: unlock the bootloader from fastboot, flash CWM recovery through adb, then flash the root package from CWM.

Luckily it's a nexus so it's easy peasy to root and rom it. If you provide which nexus 7 you have I can help trying to locate the files you need.

Nexus Toolkit should work.
As google are nice they made it really easy to root and unlock bootloader unlike Samsung and there modified version of android.

Download TWRP for your Nexus 7 from the TWRP site.

Boot your Nexus 7 into fastboot.

Connect it to PC.

On you PC open up fastboot.bat from minimaladbandfastboot which can be found on XDA.

Run "fastboot devices", check to see it shows your device.

Run fastboot flash recovery openrecovery.twrp-flounder.whatever. Tab will auto-complete.

Hit Enter.

Let tablet reboot.

Disconnect from PC.

Hold Volume up, Volume Down, and Power to enter Fasboot, scroll to recovery.

Make a backup.

When you go to reboot via TWRP it will ask if you want to insall SuperSU.

Swipe to flash SuperSU.

Reboot and update via Google Play.
