I was born and raised into firearms and firearm safety, so maybe I have a bias, but I feel the same way you do.
Saying it would stop all crime is dumb though, because that won't ever happen. I feel that it WOULD drop crime rates significantly however.
People disown firearms because of religion and what not, and that isn't a reason to hate weapons.
"Guns don't kill people, people kill people."

So I live in the UK and all guns are banned.
Could someone explain why you would want to own a gun?
Hunting I agree with, that's popular in America as I understand
But anything else?

Home protection, personal protection, theft deterrence, personal enjoyment, "Right to keep and bear arms" amendment enthusiast, etc
There are no negatives to owning a firearm as long as you and your family know about weapon safety. Only good comes from it if everyone knows how to be safe around the weapon.

Okay, so I understand you want to feel protected, but why a gun?
Il give you an example, In my house, its rigged with motion sensors everywhere. That makes me feel secure. Within 10 seconds of the alarm going off, it rings people to notify them that we could be being robbed. I don't have a weapon of some kind in my room. I don't feel the need to have one.
Also, do you carry your gun with you when your out. This is where i see the problem. I dont live in America but how i understand it is that everyone carries a gun to stop people from hurting them or something. It counts as a deterrent. But doesn't that contradict it self as if everyone has a gun, it dont really deter people? Could you clarify?
Sorry for all the questions, but I dont understand why America lets so many people have a gun. Example again, knife crime is big in the UK. The government has said if you are found with a knife on you in the street, you will be arrested.

Everyone is open to their own opinion, myself being ex millitary have a lot of experience with guns and I believe the UK laws are best prectice.
The UK has a much smaller population and it's an island with very strict border controls which means it's harder for criminals to smuggle guns into the country. America, on the other hand, has two massive borders, one of which borders a country in the middle of a huge drug war dominated by gang violence.
If America decided to ban guns, Mexican cartels would start exporting guns over the border as well which would start up a huge black market where only criminals would be able to buy guns. You'd be taking guns away from innocent people and putting them in the hands of murderers and thieves.
Also, after guns were banned in the UK, knife crime sky rocketed. There are over 1,000 knife crime victims every month in London alone now.

Miss wrote You know what really grinds my gears? Is people who are against guns in general.\
I heard the dumbest thing ever from one of these people earlier today at the beach. He said, and I quote; "Whoever created guns should be killed and is a mass-murderer."
I almost wanted to punch a wall in disgust.
I really wish everyone would own a gun, maybe then, just maybe, all these crimes would stop.
"Blaming murder on guns is like blaming pencils for bad spelling."
Lets blame the video game industry when kids kill with guns. Even though Kids can't obtain M rated games without a Parental ID. Lets blame guns, instead of the people who pull the trigger on the guns to make them function and kill. Lets blame something but the source, and make a huge argument that is not valid in anyway. Thanks News Media, you are all amazing.
I 100% Agree with you Miss

Where in the world are you getting these statistics from.
If 1,000 people was getting stabbed every month;
1: ) Id know about it as Im pretty much on top of London and they're not
2: ) That's about 33 people every day
London is dangerous, so is every city, but not that bad

In your defence, it does say that 400 are being injured while the others are only being threatened.
My point was that knife crime increased a lot after guns were banned.

If someone with a gun they got illegally comes in my house to kill and steal id hope I have a gun nearby and the Right to use it to stop them. Back when guns were allowed every where the crime was allot lower, guns were allowed at school even show and tell and there weren't school shootings, at most 1 a year IF any. Also video games aren't the problem I played games with shooting sense I was five and I'm not killing anyone. Know how police stop bad people who have guns and are using them to possibly kill, the police use more guns 6 or more-verses-1 or 2. If the good people have a almost everyone with gun ratio, the bad people will know and be less likely to go in a house that's not theirs. More gun laws = more crime in America. America has too much government power who secretly want a dictatorship and the gun laws are to keep people who believe in freedom from enforcing the Constitution when obama screws things up and government makes civil war between them and merica type people or allows an invasion, not sure what. Google or Bing "second amendment" to know why obama doesn't like it. gun violence will never end but can lowered. the second Amendment also allows the over throwing of a corrupt government. sorry for spacing if too much together.
