The technical term is bricked. And yes people have "soft-bricked" devices, but you can do a factory restore/reset to recover from a soft brick. A "hard-brick" means you are now in possession of a very expensive paper weight. You can recover from a hard brick, but only if there is a jtag for your device. Hardbricks are very uncommon though, mostly on Samsung phones due to Knox.

I've only ever bricked one phone in my years of doing this and it was actually my bosses Motorola Atrix.
He had 3 so he didn't really care.

Other than that i've never bricked a customer or personal device.

Edit:
Well, I should say I've never irreparably bricked a device, other than my bosses. Softbricks happen every once in a while.

A little less than a year ago I hard-bricked my Galaxy S2 because I used the wrong .mds file when I was rooting it. IT SUCKED. I was really mad, lol. After that I had my old phone, The EVO, and I absolutely hated it but it got the job done. Now I'm using my iPhone 4s and I hate it so I'm waiting for the Galaxy S5 to be announced. After that if the wait is too long I'll probably buy the S4. Droids > iPhones.
