This is similar in a way to the movie "A place beyond the pines" where a rookie cop (Bradly Cooper) gets off with shot a bank robber (Ryan Gosling) and killed him. The cop in the movie gets away with it and he looks like a hero but in reality he murdered a criminal who may not have wanted to use force.
Should check out the movie its pretty good, a little long though.
