Open the console and check for dust in the fans and heat syncs. You might need to replace the thermal paste as well.

If it was overheating surely he will be given a RROD, are the fans a lot louder than normal?

It might be the power shortage. If not then its overheating even though you can't feel the heat.

The temperature overheats and the fans not working properly it shuts down let it sit for a while buy a box or something then but a xbox fan peice that attaches to the top the fan will push the air all around and keeps it cool if the fans not working not my problem

Thanks for your thoughts on what it could be.. I'll tell him to try it.. May end up having to get a new one which would suck because he has like 150 gigs of Dlc/Games/Etc.

This happened to me with my slim because my power brick was messed up. I got a new one and it worked good.
