So i'm looking to overclock my system.. not a lot but just a minor performance boost. I have the Intel i5 3570k at 3.4ghz. sadly its still on a stock cooler. I am looking to upgrade the cooler, but i was wondering if i could overclock it to like 3.8 or 4ghz while still using the stock CPU cooler.

EDIT: I have a Z77 Motherboard. This allows overclocking right?

you would probably just need to increase your fan speed rather then get a new cooler

The stock cooler is more than adequate for cooling a stock clocked CPU, but when you start increasing the voltage and core clock, especially on an Ivy Bridge chip, the temperatures sky rocket and a stock cooling solution will simply not work.

Hyper 212 for lower end. Noctua NH D14 / Phanteks / Havik 140 for higher end.

As the 1st guy said, try adding a fan/ or customizing your current one.

Yeah. i mean, the computer runs great. just overclocking would be an extra perk. So i will just wait and get the hyper 212. I would rather spend $25 on a cooler than risk a $250 chip. Thanks for the help guys

You also need to make sure your motherboard allows overclocking. Not all 1155 motherboards have that functionality.

r00t. I have a Z77 biostar motherboard. According to the description. This would work nicely with the 3570k for overclocking. Am I right?
