I don't know much about overclocking, only that it makes the component more powerful but raises the temperature too.
So, my questions are...
#1 - Is it worth it?
#2 - Does it damage the component?
#3 - How much cooling does it need?
#4 - Is it safe when cooled properly?

#1 - Is it worth it?
Overclocking makes your computer run faster. However, depending on how much you OC and mess with the voltages you will shorten the lifespan of your CPU and can possibly fry both your CPU and motherboard. It also voids the warranty with the manufacturers.
#2 - Does it damage the component?

#3 - How much cooling does it need?
Depends on how much you are going to OC. If it's just a little bit usually the stock cooler will suffice. But if you have a bad airflow in your case, is pretty warm in general etc. you should look for a better CPU cooler. The Scythe Mugen 2/3 is quite the popular one.
#4 - Is it safe when cooled properly?
When cooled properly -- Yes.
If you are going to OC then do some research first. See what others have done with your CPU, how far they could go without causing system instability, their temps and what kind of cooling they used.
